Course Description

The course is designed for municipal administrators and recreation professionals interested in expanding youth recreation programs. In this interactive session, you will be challenged to focus on the multicultural dynamic of urban life and recreation’s role in youth development, community development, and economic development. The course will include a case approach to new types of inclusive youth programs.

The course involves online pre-work that needs to be completed prior to the live session. The live session will be held via Zoom and will last approximately 2.5 hours.

Course Learning Outcomes

Through a range of individual and group activities participants will:

  • Explore how urban communities are using recreation services and leisure experiences as a focal point for revitalization, problem-solving and community building
  • Identify sources of recreational funding
  • Identify and expand community participants and programs
  • Identify program partnerships and resource

Live Session Requirements

The live Zoom session will begin promptly at the scheduled time, however, you may log on earlier if you believe you may need technical assistance with Zoom or Canvas. In order to fully participate in the live session, you will need a desktop or laptop device with a camera and microphone. During the session, we will be using the Canvas course site and Zoom chat and breakout room functions which are difficult on a phone for the level of engagement required. As an interactive online education program, you will be asked to have your camera on during the session and be in a location with minimal interruptions.
