This series includes four seminars crafted to help municipal leaders steer their towns and cities through the downturn and cope with difficult fiscal issues. The four half-day programs explore practical methods for dealing with budget cuts, by redefining the role of government and addressing the continuing increase in demand for services. Who should attend?

The seminars—which feature different topics each semester—are geared to municipal managers, administrators, finance officers, governing body members, department heads, and mayors.

Seminar 1: Dealing with Change in Organizational Design

Gain insights from experienced human resources professionals on dealing with disruptive change in organizations. Learn how to use communication and motivation techniques in working in new organization models.

Seminar 2: Evaluating Financial Trends

This course provides nationally recognized measurements to gauge municipal financial stability. The seminar will focus on the timely use of benchmarks as indicators of possible financial pitfalls, and the use of tools to take corrective action as necessary.

Seminar 3: Practical Application of Labor Management in New Jersey

This half-day seminar will explore ways to address labor management issues as leaders focus on doing more with less. Informed by the existing legislation and rules, cases will be used in the seminar to provide specific advice and examples on how to deal with labor management. 

Seminar 4: Communications and Leadership - using all the tools

Facilitated by an experienced communication manager, the seminar addresses both personal and  organizational uses of communications and social media tools. The course materials include a toolkit for getting started with social media for personal and municipal use.  The facilitator will review how social media can be used in community engagement, crisis communications, and public relations. Tips on setting a social media policy for your municipal employees will also be discussed.

Fees, Registration, and Cancellation

The fee for all four courses is $600.  Fees include all materials and continental breakfast.

To cancel or reschedule an individual seminar, students must contact Rutgers CELG at least two weeks in advance of the seminar. Students will incur a $25 change for each course rescheduled if notice is received at least two weeks in advance. 

Enrollment and Credits

Enroll in the full series. Participants must complete all four seminars to earn a Rutgers Leadership Certificate.   Those who complete the entire series can earn 6.0 CEUs.
